Local Graffiti artists and over a hundred more from across the country descended on Preston Road at the weekend. No.. this wasn’t some kind of rampage. It was in fact, part two of a brilliant idea organised by the Hull Bankside Gallery.
Last year a set of 10 rundown houses on this derelict area of Hull were donated by the city council for the artists to spray paint. The buildings are due to be demolished in the near future and this was a colourful sort of way to say goodbye to them. Not only did it Bring visitors to the Preston Road area but it had the unexpected result of a huge drop in antisocial behaviour and arson attacks on the derelict properties.
Roll forward to last weekend when this new two-day event saw the transformation of 22 more houses. Due to work commitments I couldn’t watch the street artists paint but I couldn’t resist going along afterwards. I had my camera with me to capture some of the amazing mural’s and brightly coloured graffiti on display. They certainly made for some stunning surreal photographs.
